VOYAGE OF THE ‘GRANMA’

The Castro brothers, Guevara and 79 other insurgents sail from Mexico to Cuba on a boat called ‘Granma’. They land at Playa Las Coloradas in Oriente Province on 2 December 1956 but are ambushed by Batista’s troops.

The majority of the revolutionaries are killed, with only about a dozen escaping to begin guerrilla operations.

The original ‘Granma’ boat is preserved in a museum but this replica is used to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Bay of Pigs Invasion in Havana, 16 April 2011
