SIEGES OF GIBRALTAR

Gibraltar is besieged eight times in a power struggle between Castile and the Islamic powers of Granada and Morocco during the 14th-15th centuries. Castile finally gains controls of the famous rock, which becomes strategically important for the final defeat of Granada.

Alfonso XI of Castile commanded the fourth and fifth sieges of Gibraltar. The castle design in the Castilian flag now forms part of the current flag of Gibraltar
