WAR IN FOCUS
TAKEN: 10 AUGUST 1941
Stunning imagery from throughout history
Churchill and President Roosevelt met aboard the HMS Prince of Wales, where they discussed the course of the war and the increase in support from the United States, then still officially neutral. The meeting was followed by a joint statement outlining eight principles of the two nations’ intentions both during and after the war. Known as the Atlantic Charter, the statement was not an official treaty or formal alliance
– this would take place with the
Declaration of the United Nations in January 1942.
