POUR LE MÉRITE

King Frederick II of Prussia creates a military and civil honour ‘For Merit’. It becomes the most prestigiou­s military award of the German Empire and becomes informally known as the ‘Blue Max’. It is abolished in 1918 after Germany’s defeat in WWI, although the civil award is still active.
