Although both east and west suffer depravatio­ns at the hands of the Huns, the east weathers this storm far better than the west. By 476 CE the last emperor of the west, Romulus Augustulus, is deposed by the barbarian Odoacer, probably of Gothic origin. This marks the beginning of the Byzantine Empire, although inhabitant­s continue to call themselves Romans.
