“OVERPAID AND OVER HERE!”
The first US troops to be posted to the European theatre arrived in Belfast, Northern Ireland, on 26 January. The 34th Infantry Division came sporting the familiar ‘doughboy’ M1918 helmets, reminiscent of the American expeditionary forces who made a similar journey across the Atlantic when the US entered the First World War. By the end of 1942, over 1.5 million US personnel had made the journey to Britain.
