After a largely disastrous fighting retreat from the advancing Japanese invasion, the British garrison in Singapore officially surrenders, resulting in around 130,000 Allied soldiers being taken prisoner. Churchill calls the loss of Singapore the “worst disaster and largest capitulati­on in British history”.
