Japan launches an offensive against Midway Atoll, a key US position in the Pacific that would give the IJN a base from which to strike further east towards Hawaii. Four

IJN carriers launch aircraft to attack Midway’s airfield, but upon returning to refuel are themselves attacked by the US fleet. The Japanese lose four carriers and suffer over 3,000 casualties to the US loss of one carrier and around 360 casualties.
