GILBERT AND MARSHALL ISLANDS CAMPAIGN

Admiral Chester W Nimitz, commander-in-chief of the US Pacific Fleet and Pacific Ocean Areas, launches an amphibious invasion of the large number small coral islands and atolls known as the Gilberts and the Marshalls. This relieves pressure from the south-west Pacific region, establishi­ng air bases from which to continue attacks into the central Pacific.
