SECOND BATTLE OF HAKATA BAY
The shogun’s samurai are again ready to meet Kublai’s forces at Hakata Bay, and this time have constructed a large wall to block any Mongol landing. Ignoring Kublai’s orders, the smaller Koryo fleet sails ahead without waiting for the Chinese section, and arrives first at Hakata. However, the invaders are repeatedly pushed back by spears and hails of arrows, and are unable to break out of the beach. The battle turns into a siege, with the Koryo fleet stuck at sea bombarding the samurai positions with missiles. After their initial setback the invasion fleet weighs anchor in the mouth of Hakata Bay and makes a landing on the tiny Shika Island. The samurai begin launching small raiding parties to attack the Mongol ships, employing hit-and-run tactics – killing and burning as much as possible before retreating back to the shore.
