STRATEGIC ARMS LIMITATION TALKS

By the mid-1960s, alarming intelligence estimates on the Soviet nuclear arsenal compel President Lyndon Johnson to orchestrate talks with his Kremlin counterpart. These Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (Salt)continue for years as Moscow and Washington wrangle over warhead totals. A SALT II deal is signed on 17 June 1979.
