On 4 April 1968, Martin Luther King Jr was shot down on the bal­cony of his Mem­phis mo­tel. The day be­fore his funeral, thou­sands took to the streets in hon­our of the civil rights leader and in sup­port of the strik­ing san­i­ta­tion work­ers that had brought King to the Ten­nessee city. De­spite calls for his tire­less com­mit­ment to non-vi­o­lence to be up­held, ri­ots broke out in cities all over the US af­ter King’s as­sas­si­na­tion.
