Germany sends a gun­boat to the Moroc­can port of Agadir, chal­leng­ing France’s rights over the coun­try and trig­ger­ing a diplo­matic cri­sis.

29 AU­GUST

Ishi, the last known mem­ber of the Yahi peo­ple, emerges out of the Cal­i­for­nian wilder­ness. Aged around 50 when he ap­peared, he lived un­til 1916 – spend­ing his fi­nal years be­ing stud­ied by (and liv­ing at) the Univer­sity of Cal­i­for­nia, Berke­ley.

4 OC­TO­BER

Earls Court be­comes the first London Un­der­ground sta­tion to have an es­ca­la­tor fit­ted. A one-legged man was paid to be the first to use it, to demon­strate its safety.

3 NOVEM­BER

In Detroit, the Chevro­let Mo­tor Com­pany en­ters the au­to­mo­bile in­dus­try to com­pete with Ford.
