Stan­ley – aka first Earl of Derby – had feet in both camps dur­ing the Wars of the Roses. His first mar­riage was into a pow­er­ful York­ist fam­ily, while his sec­ond made him step­fa­ther to the prom­i­nent Lan­cas­trian Henry Tudor. At the de­ci­sive Bat­tle of Bos­worth, he waited un­til the Lan­cas­trian vic­tory was all but as­sured be­fore com­mit­ting his troops to his step­son, soon to be King Henry VII.
