Win a stay at the Altnaharra

Enter our exclusive competition for your chance to win a twonight break at the historic Altnaharra in the Scottish highlands

-

One of Scotland's oldest fishing hotels is celebrating its 200th birthday and History Scotland is giving readers the chance to win a two-night stay at this historic hotel. The Altnaharra site was a drovers' inn in the 16th century, opening as a hotel in 1821.

Set in the north west highlands, an hour's drive north from Inverness, Altnaharra has twelve bedrooms plus a self-catering cottage.

A relaxing break

Altnaharra was welcoming guests before the first authoritative books on fly fishing in Britain were even written.

Still renowned as a fishing hotel, Altnaharra has its own boats on several local lochs. Brown trout, sea trout and salmon abound in nearby lochs, rivers and streams. These include Hope, one of the UK's finest sea trout lochs, and the Naver, one of its most highly rated salmon rivers. Some of its fishing history is encapsulated in catch records, old fishing logs and specimens displayed in glass cases.

Yet there's far more to it than fish. The area is a paradise for walkers, bird watchers and climbers and includes Scotland's most northerly Munro (mountain over 3,000 feet high), Ben Hope. Herds of deer can be a common sight, depending upon the time of year.

Twenty miles north of Lairg and a leisurely two-hour drive from John o' Groats, it's an ideal base for touring an area packed with picture-postcard sights.

The hotel prides itself on its cuisine, featuring classic and fine dining options. Guests can relax in the evening in front of a crackling log fire.

Its sister hotel, the ten-bedroom Stronlossit Inn, nestles in the picturesque highland village of Roy Bridge, a short drive from Fort William, ‘outdoor capital of the UK.' It is also a popular stop on the route to Skye and other Hebridean islands.

Among local attractions are the Glenfinnan railway viaduct, made famous in the Harry Potter stories and films as the entrance to the School of Wizardry at Hogwarts Castle.
