Remote & Rural Remedies
The College has launched a resource titled Remote & Rural Remedies (www.rcpe.ac.uk/ remote and rural remedies), which shares the stories from the Victorian surveys mentioned in this article online. The surveys have been digitised, transcribed and indexed to allow for ease of access. To provide some context, the site also includes blogs, online exhibitions and short talks uncovering stories from the history of medicine in the highlands and islands.
Remote & Rural Remedies also includes interviews with modern-day practitioners, discussing the challenges they experience. In one of these interviews, Dr Charlie Siderfin, a GP in Orkney, discusses how, even now, in the more remote Orkney Islands it can take up to three days for a patient to travel to Aberdeen for treatment.
