‘Unique and quirky’ redevelopment to take place at Glencoe Museum
Glencoe museum has revealed details of its redevelopment project, which will see the museum extended and new visitor facilities created
Supported by first stage National Lottery funding, Glencoe folk museum is working with exhibition designers Mather and Co and Peter Drummond Architects on a comprehensive redevelopment project.
Housed in traditional 18thcentury heather-thatched cottages, the museum was founded in 1967 by Barbara Fairweather MBE, Rae Grant, and friends.
Development funding of £74,000 was awarded in July 2021 by the National Lottery Heritage Fund to help the museum progress their plans to apply for a full National Lottery grant in the near future.
Museum curator Catriona Davidson said: ‘We’re very excited to have reached the point of working with designers and architects, and we know Mather and Drummond share our vision for unlocking the museum’s full potential. We all love their approach of taking our unique charm and everything special about our museum and bringing it to life in new fun, accessible ways.We can’t wait to see the designs!’
One of the aims in the development stage of the new museum is to work with local communities – this will enable visitors to explore theirs and other people’s heritage in a relevant and relatable way and discover the context and the history behind their life today.
The museum redevelopment is expected to be completed in 2023. Glencoe museum is closed for the winter season and will reopen in April. Website: www. glencoemuseum.com
