The first day of the October Revolution (Russia were using the Julian calendar when they named it) was the spark for the Russian civil war. After the Provisiona­l Government shut down newspapers and closed off Petrograd the day before to try to prevent the revolution, a fleet of Bolshevik sailors entered the harbour leading to tens of thousands of soldiers rising up in support of the Bolsheviks.
