How to make the fabric plant pots

These fabric-covered plant pots are such a pretty addition to any bedroom – and as they’re so easy to make you’ll be able to produce several in one evening. They can be put to all sorts of uses, so they’re more than just plant pots! They’re fab for storing all the bits and pieces that accumulate in a bedroom – accessories, jewellery, loose change, beauty products… And why stop at the bedroom? Make another set for your home office, kitchen or bathroom. Choose fabric that co-ordinates with your room, or you could use papers instead of fabric – just varnish the pots thoroughly for a robust finish.

1

Place fabric right side down on your worktop. Paint PVA onto the plant pot and smooth the fabric into place. Keep painting glue onto the pot until you’ve covered it all round. Trim the fabric where it overlaps to remove any excess.

2

Trim the bottom edge so you have enough fabric to fold under the pot – about 2-3cm (1in) is plenty. Glue into position on the bottom of the pot.

3

Trim the top edge of fabric to about 2-3cm (1in) and fold over the top edge, gluing into position.

4

Neaten the raw edges inside the top of the pot by gluing a strip of bias binding all the way round the inside edge, covering the raw fabric edges.

5

Draw around the bottom of the pot onto paper. Using the circle as a template, cut a felt circle just a little smaller than the circle you have drawn.

6

Glue the felt circle to the base of the plant pot, this is a simple but effective way to cover the raw edges. This is optional, but does neaten the bottom of the pot.

7

To finish your pots, make some decorative tags using paper luggage tags, fabric and buttons. Draw faux stitching with a fineline marker pen. Glue the string to one side of the pot and wrap it around, threading the tag onto the string before tying it with a knot.
