Turn kids’ wellies into plant pots
We love the idea of taking something ordinary and turning it into something really special. These cute welly planters are a great little upcycling project, but equally as good with new boots. For those with green fingers, you can grow plants from seeds or take cuttings from well-established plants – whatever suits your gardening ability most! We’ve planted herbs in our wellies, which could fit on a kitchen windowsill, but we think they’re just at home outdoors. And if you’re feeling extra creative you could always spruce up plain wellies by painting them in bright colours and labelling the herbs inside.
How to make the welly planters
1 Remove any sole insert in the bottom of the welly. Clean the boot thoroughly. Drill or push a screwdriver into the sole to make a few drainage holes. Be careful not to damage the sides or the top of the boot.
2 Place a few pebbles or broken bits of old terracotta pot into the bottom. Fill with compost (to the toe, if possible), leaving enough room for the plant. Place the plant in the top and fill with compost around the root ball. Water well.
