Peg picture frames are fantastic for creating a unique place to keep reminders, photos, birthday cards and other keepsakes. They are super-quick to make and, better still, these frames can easily be revamped to suit every season with just a simple lick of paint! Pastel shades are perfect for spring and summer, but if you fancy a change come autumn, a mix of red, orange and other earthy tones will give these frames an entirely different feel. You could even create a set of festive frames in red, green and gold for showing off your Christmas cards!

How to make the upcycled display boards

1 Remove the backing from your frames and discard. Remove or hammer flat any metal tabs or other devices that are used to hold the backing in place. Give the frames a good wash with hot, soapy water. Dry them then rub down with fine sandpaper.

2 Choose three colours of paint that complement each other and paint each frame in one of the colours. Paint the front first, wait until dry, then flip over and paint the back. Repeat so the frames have two coats of paint each to give a good depth of colour. Leave them to dry.

3 Once completely dry, lightly sand the edges and corners of the frames, removing small patches of paint to achieve a distressed look. If you prefer, you can leave the frames as a block colour for a more contemporary statement look.

4 Arrange the wire in rows horizontally across the frames. When spacing them, consider what you will be displaying in the frames to ensure there is enough room. The first row can be as close to the top of the frame as the height of the peg. The second as far below the first to enable you to peg cards without them overlapping the wire that makes up the second row.

5 Measure down from the top the same distance on either side of the frame (depending on where you have chosen to place your wire) and drill holes straight through from the insides of the frame to the outside edges. Thread your wire through a couple of times and twist or knot to secure.

6 Attach a picture hook to the centre of your frame at the back for hanging. Larger frames will need two fixtures. Use colourful mini pegs to secure your photos, letters and notecards to the wire.
