‘I think beautiful should be for everyone, not just for Instagram’

When the Dulux team met to turn their ideas into beautiful palettes for 2021, the colour that came through most strongly at first was a deep, bitter chocolate. The team decided this colour would be great for glossy pictures in magazines, but not for the interiors of real homes.

‘What we would be saying is, we’ve chosen this amazing colour but only for a few of you,’ says Marianne. So this bitter chocolate hue was toned down to a shade that could work in any home – the gentler Brave Ground. Instead, the deep chocolate was used in one of the palettes produced to work with Brave Ground – the soothing ‘ Trust’ palette.

Making sure that Dulux’s colours are relevant to all of us is important to Marianne. ‘I think that beautiful should be for everyone. The majority of us don’t want to take a massive decision to paint something in a deep, dark brown or an emerald green, which may look great on Instagram but that’s not necessarily what all of us want to live with daily.’
