Transform mismatched vintage china plates into cute and quirky wall art

-

We’ve all got a few odd plates lurking at the back of the cupboard and, with just a few paint pens or some self-adhesive vinyl, you can transform them into on-trend positive affirmation plaques to display on your wall.

Takes 50 mins you will n need

 Vintage china plates  Scrap paper  HB and 6B pencils  Masking tape

 Uniball Posca marker pens, from £3 each, Hobbycraft  Cricut Basic permanent gloss vinyl, £10 for six sheets, Hobbycraft  Cricut Maker digital cutting machine or a craft knife  Weeding tool or sewing needle  Cricut transfer tape, £7 per roll, Hobbycraft  Scraper tool or old credit card

1

Clean the surface of your plates thoroughly to remove any traces of dirt and grease. Print your chosen phrase onto paper. Use a 6B pencil to cover the back of the words in graphite. Cut out the phrase and attach it to the plate right side up using masking tape. Use a HB pencil to trace around the letters to transfer the graphite onto the surface of the plate. 2Carefully

remove the printed paper to reveal the outline of the phrase on the plate. Use paint marker pens to colour in the letters. You can also use them to add flourishes, flowers or love hearts to embellish your design. Allow the paint to dry thoroughly. As these plates are for decorative use, not food use, there is no need to varnish the surface.

3To

decorate your plates with vinyl, first use a digital cutting machine to design your phrase and cut it into a sheet of self-adhesive vinyl. If you don’t have a digital cutting machine you can draw your phrase onto vinyl and carefully cut it out using a sharp craft knife, but try not to cut through the backing paper beneath. Once you’ve cut your phrase, use a weeding tool or a sewing needle to gently remove the excess vinyl from the backing paper.

4

Cut a piece of transfer tape the same size as your phrase, place it over the letters, sticky side down, and rub it firmly using a scraper tool or old credit card to adhere the vinyl letters to the sticky side of the tape. Carefully peel the tape and vinyl letters away from the backing paper.

5

Place the tape and letters in the desired position on your plate and use the scraper tool to rub the surface of the transfer tape to adhere the letters to the plate. Make sure to rub the whole design. 6

Carefully peel away the tape to finish, and your plate is ready to hang!
