WHAT I LEARNED...

-

One thing it’s easy to get wrong is scale and proportion, like a massive sofa with a super tiny coffee table, or a gallery wall with tiny pictures spaced out on a huge wall. Always use the rule of thirds if you get stuck. For instance, your seating area should take up two-thirds of the living room, your sofa should be two-thirds of that, and your coffee table two-thirds of your sofa.

When grouping different styles of things together, pick a colour palette to unify them. I’d suggest no more than five and preferably three colours. You can mix up eras and styles, but some go together better than others, like shabby chic and coastal as they’re both very relaxed, or industrial warehouse and mid-century, as they both have strong lines.
