Three simple tricks to try in your own home

OLD MEETS NEW Mix up old and new to add personality to the room. Look on secondhand sites for old pieces of wooden furniture that are in keeping with the age of your home, like a chest of drawers or wall cabinets, and consider how you could reinterpret them in your home. Customise your piece with a lick of paint, a stencil design or new handles. Team with contemporary geometric patterns in the room and green plants for an eclectic feel. PAINT THE CEILING Sprucing up the ceiling will make a big impact. Plus, paint will cover up those hard-to-reach stains that occur in high-moisture spaces. Pick a finish that’s both stylish and functional – a water-resistant eggshell is a good choice. Cover up the floor and any fixtures and fittings so that they’re safe from paint splatters. For the best coverage, use a roller and be sure to work in the same direction. ‘Painting the ceiling has made it feel really cosy,’ says Lianne.

MAKE IT HOMELY Treat your bathroom like you would any other room in the house for a warm, welcoming feel.
