The rooms where we’ve rushed in and painted before living with it for a while are the rooms we’ve ended up redoing. Grow into the space and don’t feel like you have to do everything at once.

I always shop around at house clearances and flea markets to find more unusual one-off pieces that will add personality. I can’t imagine designing a room from scratch with all new furniture.

If you get a package deal from a kitchen supplier, get it broken down and itemised so that you can shop around a little, as you can often find some items at a lower price.
