Always get a sample first, as the light in your room will have a big impact. Many websites will post them out for free.

Go for a natural finish rather than polished. Anti-slip tiles are only really needed for wetrooms. Porcelain tiles are best with underfloor heating.

Save money with a simple subway tile but lay them in a different formation for a fresh twist. There are many different alternatives to the typical brickwork style, from crosshatch to vertical stack bond.

Your choice of grout can make a huge difference. Opt for the same shade of grout as your tiles for a colour drench look, especially if there’s a lot going on elsewhere in the room. A dark grout with a light tile (and vice versa) will add definition but can sometimes look too busy.

Take time choosing the right trim, as there are many more options than just chrome, black, white or grey. One failsafe idea is to match the trim to your taps, shower and bathroom fittings.

Order 10 to 15 per cent more than the measured area to account for cuts and waste. If you buy extra later on, they could come from a different batch with a slightly different colour variation.
