Wing-shaped Roof
Architect Meredith Bowles, a keen birdwatcher, says his design for the roof was inspired by the wing of a herring gull (the front door – not shown – is “beak orange” while the seagull grey roof and white timber reflect the bird’s colouring). “Constructing the twisting roof on this prefabricated timber self-build was perhaps the most challenging part,” he adds. While not structurally complicated, the geometry of the roof meant that every joist had to be cut to a different angle.
“The roof is my favourite feature,” says archivist Richard Wilson, shown with partner Ben Baglio, a ceramicist, ( opposite). This is the couple’s first self-build.
