conditions. Rain can eventually cause timber to rot and harsh sun can cause timber to discolour or warp and flex. In my opinion, aluminium is usually more versatile and can be used for more complicated designs at larger sizes.

If it’s the expense you’re concerned about, the initial cost of aluminium frames is indeed more than PVCu frames, but the strength and durability of aluminium means they last longer so become a better investment in the long term. Timber, on the other hand, is often more expensive than aluminium but the material does not offer the same longevity. Aluminium is more affordable in the first instance and is extremely durable, so you won’t have to put a lot of extra money into maintenance over the years.

From an energy-efficiency perspective, aluminium gives great performance. The current U value regulations are 1.8kW/m2 when you are replacing existing doors and 2.0kW/m2 for new builds or extensions. Aluminium doors with triple-glazed units can achieve U values of 1.32kW/m2, well below the level set by the government, helping to keep your home at the optimum temperature, no matter what the weather is like outside.
