do I Need planning Consent for an annexe?

QWe are looking to build an annexe in the garden as we are limited on space in the home. Do we need permission?

An annexe is, by definition, associated with the main home. In most cases, it will offer a degree of independen­t living that gives it the feel of the occupier’s own space. For most people, a ‘granny annexe’ would be a self-contained bedroom and living room, a bathroom and kitchen area, allowing someone to live in it without needing to use the main house.

A good way of thinking about it is that if your garden building, whatever shape or size, is going to be slept in, it needs planning permission. If you decide to go ahead anyway, be very careful.
