9 LADY LIBERTY
The most iconic sculpture in the world stands on an island in Upper New York Bay and measures 93 metres tall. The Statue of Liberty, originally named Liberty Enlightening the World, was a gift from France to America in 1886 to mark the union’s victory in the American Revolution. Sculptor FrédéricAuguste Bartholdi designed the statue while engineer Gustave Ei el, who went on to design the Ei el Tower, helped create the structural elements and framework. The robed female figure, who represents Libertas, the Roman goddess of freedom, was constructed in France. Pieces including the head were exhibited at the Paris World’s Fair in 1878, the statue was then dismantled and shipped across the Atlantic.
