Designer Juliet Travers on creating her hand-drawn wallpapers and fabrics
I rst became involved with wallpaper
while studying, where I gained experience with a range of di!erent companies including Fox Linton and Cole & Son. My "rst job was at de Gournay, which really launched me into the world of wallpaper at the highest possible standard.
On a typical day,
I arrive at the o#ce a$er dropping my son o! at nursery and have a catch up with my team. Our showroom is open by appointment, so we might have clients coming in to discuss projects or to see our designs in situ. There’s no escape from emails and various production issues, but I try not to spend the whole day in front of my screen!
Nature is de nitely my main source of inspiration.
My "rst collection, Safari, was inspired by the animals of East Africa where I have spent lots of time with my husband’s family, who are from Zimbabwe. My second collection is based on wildlife a li%le closer to home, like the swans and songbirds that I see in Hyde Park while walking my dog, or the Highland cows and red squirrels from Dumfriesshire where I grew up.
I keep on top of trends and new products
through magazines and interiors trade events, but social media (particularly Instagram) is huge for spo%ing new things that I like.
I love working as a designer
because no day is the same! I love meeting with clients, visiting projects in various stages of installation and talking to my team about the fresh ideas we have to get our products to new audiences.
My Highland Fling wallpaper
will always have a special place in my heart as it’s what I used to decorate my son’s nursery. In the early days, when the company was based at my home, we used Archie’s room as an o#ce, and it always makes me smile to think of it going full circle. 020 7924 3883; juliettravers.com
