In­vented by am­a­teur Ger­man en­graver Lud­wig von Siegen in 1642, mez­zotint refers to fab­u­lously mul­ti­tonal prints cra ed from a treated plate of cop­per or steel. A metal tool was used to in­dent the plate with tiny dots to give ar­eas of light and shade be­fore the ink was brushed on top. Prices for an­tique mez­zot­ints start at around £50.
