Struck by Pa ern

-

My mother really enjoys her monthly copy of H&A and she would like your expert opinion on this li! le jug.

She bought it in a charity shop in Weybridge a number of years ago as she was struck by its pa! ern. It is 14.2 cm tall and has the mark as shown in the photograph. Its condition is fair rather than good. Can you shed any light on it?

Jo Parkes on behalf of Anne Fenton Lewis, via email

I’m sorry to say I can’t shed much light on it at all, which is a shame because I too am rather struck by the design. I’m not familiar with the mark on the bo!om and I haven’t been able to identify it. When I "rst saw it, the painted design reminded me of pieces by the artist Duncan Grant, who was part of the Bloomsbury Group, and of the textile designs that the Omega Workshops produced. The other thought that crosses my mind is whether it is work from an evening school, painted onto a blank. At auction, in fair condition, I would suggest an estimate of £60 to £ 100.
