Creative Director of Burleigh Steven Moore on keeping heritage po ery alive and celebrating antiques

-

I grew up with po ery:

my father taught it and my mother made it. If the breakfast bowls at home ever got broken, mother just made more! It’s no wonder that I ended up collecting and dealing in antiques at a young age.

I became involved with Burleigh

in 2011 a !er I was appointed Ambassador for The Prince’s Regeneration Trust, one of HRH The Prince of Wales’ charities. I gradually became involved in helping Burleigh to showcase what it does, and I was formally o"ered the Creative Director role in 2015.

I’m not only involved with the products

that Burleigh make, but the whole look of the brand. Basically, if there’s something the public see, handle or read, I want to ensure it’s saying the best it can about the company. I’ve also wri#en and directed several short $ lms about Burleigh and had a hand in creating the new logo and packaging.

Being able to celebrate what we do here

is a privilege, and keeping old skills alive is a passion. The last year has seen me visit Japan, Paris, Rome and America representing Burleigh. No day is ever alike and I love that. I can go from meeting clients and showing visitors around our factory to being interviewed by a magazine.

Ceramics are the heart of the home,

especially during the festive season. Most families have an old turkey plate that they dust o" once a year – but imagine the occasions it has borne witness to! Ceramics are the quiet signposts along our lives – they’re almost like a part of the family. We really should celebrate them more.
