the BAUBLE

Homes and Antiques Magazine - - CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS -

Much as the fashion for decorating a "r tree originated in Germany, so too did the glass ornament that hung from its branches. Since the 16th century, the small mountain town of Lauscha in eastern Germany has been a glassmaking centre, and the "rst shop there was opened by Hans Greiner and Christo# Mueller, selling hand-blown swags of glass beads to drape over trees at Christmas among other glassware.

By the 1840s, a descendant of Greiner’s began making glass versions of the nuts and fruits traditionally hung on trees. Before long they evolved into the baubles, kugel in German, that we know and love today.
