THE AUCTION HOUSE: Roseberys, London THE LOT: An oil sketch by John Constable sold on 21st March THE PRICE: £375,000 (est £20,000-£30,000)

‘We were cataloguing for our Pictures 1500-1900 sale when an oil painting caught my eye,’ says Roseberys’ Director Marcus Grey. ‘It was something about the sloping of the roof that reminded me of Constable.’ The auction house spent four months researching the picture, working with Anne Lyles, former curator at Tate Britain and Constable expert, who con!rmed that it was indeed a lost Constable. The sketch was executed in 1821-22, possibly in Hampstead where the Constable family lived in the summer, and probably belonged to the artist’s daughter Isabel, who divided more than 30 oil paintings among nieces, nephews and friends. 020 8761 2522; roseberys.co.uk
