LUSTRE UNDIMMED
THE AUCTION HOUSE: Lyon & Turnbull, Edinburgh THE LOTS: Pilkington Lancastrian lustreware sold on 10th October THE PRICE: £82,500 total (est £14,000-£21,000)
When the owners of Kirkton House, just outside Montrose, decided to sell up, the contents went to auction. Chief among many treasures was a large collection of late 19th and early 20thcentury art po!ery by William De Morgan, Doulton and Pilkington. Of the 30 pieces of Pilkington lustreware, two had star quality – a 1910 charger designed by Walter Crane that sold for £ 40,000, and a mammoth 1909 Apollo vase painted by Gordon Forsyth, £ 42,500. ‘ They were both lovely pieces, in good condition, with even "ring and in beautiful colours. Enthusiastic collectors are looking for something special,’ says John Mackie, a director at Lyon & Turnbull.
