The First World War breaks out in Au­gust

1917

The De Stijl art move­ment is founded. It was a big in­flu­ence on the early Bauhaus.

1918

Ar­mistice is agreed ending the First World War

1919

The Treaty of Ver­sailles im­poses puni­tive peace terms on Ger­many. Wal­ter Gropius founds the Bauhaus move­ment in Weimar, Ger­many.

1923

Bauhaus stages its first ma­jor ex­hi­bi­tion: ‘Art and Tech­nol­ogy: A New Unity’. This slo­gan was coined as a guid­ing prin­ci­ple.

1924

Con­ser­va­tive par­ties in Weimar call for fund­ing to Bauhaus to be cut and for the school to be shut down. Wil­helm Wa­gen­feld de­signs the WG24 lamp.
