100 years of BAUHAUS
2019 marks 100 years since Walter Gropius opened the Bauhaus school in Weimar. Over 500 events have been planned in Germany to mark the centenary. Here are the best in Germany and elsewhere…
• From 16th to 24th January the Bauhaus Association will launch the centenary celebrations in Berlin with a week-long festival including performances, music and film. bauhausfestival.de
• The ‘Grand Tour Modernism’ links up 100 important modernist sites in Germany via a specially designed route. grandtourdermoderne.de
• Catch the end of the Tate Modern’s Anni Albers exhibition until 27th January. Albers was one of the most influential textile designers of the 20th century, though this is her first UK retrospective. tate.org.uk/whats-on/ tate-modern/exhibition/anni-albers
• From October 2019 the William Morris Gallery in Walthamstow will host
Pioneers of Modernism. William Morris and Bauhaus, which will examine the influence of the Arts and Crafts movement on the early years of Bauhaus. wmgallery.org.uk
• The V&A will host a short introductory course to Bauhaus running over 10 weeks. It will look at the characters of Bauhaus as well as its legacy. vam.ac.uk/event/rpjNjKpV/ bauhaus
• Walter Gropius eventually took a position as professor of architecture at Harvard. The Harvard Art
