Wri en in stone

-

I found the feature on cemeteries in the July edition very interesting. It also triggered a memory. There is a huge municipal cemetery in Melbourne, Australia, which is divided up into nationalities and religions. My grandmother died suddenly on board a ship returning to England from New Zealand in 1940. Her hasty funeral in Melbourne, while the ship was in harbour, was well documented. By chance, my granddaughter was a student in Melbourne and she was able to visit her great-great-grandmother’s grave in 2016. She found there was no memorial stone marking the grave, only a number on the plot records. With the help of a very good stonemason, I was able to rectify this, 76 years a#er my grandmother’s death.
