HOPE & HARLEQUIN

Louise Hill of Hope & Harlequin in Brighton has been dealing in vintage fashion for 15 years…

-

I trained originally in sculpture and metalwork at Camberwell in London, then went on to work in interiors, jewellery and as a fashion buyer, as well as working in bridal. It’s all quite visual, so vintage clothing is a natural extension of that and is sculptural in its own way.

I opened my doors in 2007 in Brighton’s North Laine. I have always loved interesting clothes since I was a child, playing in my mum’s closet (she had Mary Quant and Afghan dresses and coats!) As a teenager I went to London markets and looked in the tucked away shops in Brighton, not able to afford much, but loving the special feeling and uniqueness of the clothes on offer. Having worked in fashion and as a buyer, it seemed a natural progression to sell fashion that was not a quick turnover, but had longevity, history, ethics and a little romance and intrigue. It was more accidental than intentional as a career move!

I sell garments from the 1920s to the 70s with an emphasis on event dresses, be that for weddings or other occasions. Also, anything special and wonderful that is more day-today. I try to choose things that I fall in love with a little.

I always think it’s more about what you buy than where you buy, as each vintage store’s stock is as unique as its owner.

My favourite things usually come from private collections; either family heirlooms or people downsizing. The special things usually get kept and loved. Clothes hold such history and memories. One of my favourite finds was three Ossie Clark dresses, bought early in my career from someone who used to model for him in the 70s. I still have one in my collection.

I was born in the Seventies so it always resonates with me and is one of my favourite looks. I love all the eras, though, for their particular stories. Clothes are such a snapshot of the social and political movements of the times.

I hope my shop is like popping into someone’s large closet and having an exciting rummage. I’m not formal but like to help to style the garments and find the perfect thing for each person. It’s very ‘ luck of the draw’ with vintage, which is part of its appeal.

I love the thrill of the hunt and finding that special piece. It’s never predictable. I also love the uniqueness of the people who choose to wear and sell vintage – it’s always a joy to get a snippet of a client’s life and see where their new-found piece is going to go for its next adventure. It’s a shared passion from seller to buyer. hopeandharlequin.com
