COMBINE glowing seasonal colours
Make autumn’s fiery red, orange and yellow leaves pop by combining them with more subtle blues, purples, pinks and creams. Consider a mix of pink sedums in your border, such as Hylotelephium
spectabile (syn. Sedum spectabile), which bloom to the end of November, and a dark purple smoke bush (Cotinus
coggygria ‘Royal Purple’). At this time of year, these muted tones will provide the perfect foil for the blazing foliage of a Japanese maple, such as Acer palmatum
‘Sango-kaku’, in its full autumn guise.
Remove faded blooms from repeat-flowering roses to keep new ones coming throughout autumn. In late November, leave the last flowers to die – they’ll then display colourful hips over winter.” FIONA HARRISON MSGD, designer, fionaharrisondesign.com.
