MEET THE MAKERS

Sam Pearson and Anna Kidel of Mythology @mythology_furniture

Tell us about your background? We both have creative backgrounds and when we first met we were both working in the film industry. We started making some basic furniture for our home as a fun project alongside this, but this hobby quickly developed into a passion and before long we’d decided to move on from our previous careers and dive headfirst into the design and making world.

What inspires you? Nature is a constant source of inspiration. We describe our design process as ‘nature-led’. We source our timber locally depending on what’s available, often from trees felled in London – due to development or natural causes – that would normally be chipped and burned. This wood, which usually has more character than imported wood that’s been grown for commercial purposes, is often the starting point for our designs and we seek to champion nature’s ‘imperfections’ and its chaotic beauty. We also draw inspiration from heritage crafts from all over the world, as we believe that tried and tested techniques give our pieces a longevity that is unobtainable with more industrial methods.

Can you recommend any other designers/ creatives that we should know about? We’ve recently come across a brand called rrres based in Mexico, who make beautiful pieces using traditional techniques. We can’t get enough of their work.

If you weren’t furniture designers, what was your plan B? We’ve both been on quite a journey to get here, trying our hands at countless things. So, in a way, furniture design was our plan B. Luckily for us, it turned out to be much better than plan A! →
