MEET THE DESIGNER

We talk to Julian Chichester as the brand celebrates 35 years

-

Where did you begin?

In 1986, I left my job as a market trader in the city and went travelling through Asia with the idea of importing antiques. In Thailand, it was very low-key and relaxed; I had a motorbike with a sidecar that transported antiques to the warehouse. We began selling eclectic furniture and homeware from a shop on Portobello Road. Later, I designed teak garden furniture, and in 1995, we had our first collection of five pieces, all in black with gilt detail, which launched to great acclaim at Decorex in Chicago.

Where do you look for inspiration?

Taking classical shapes from 19th- and 20th-century greats such as Jean Royère and Jean-michel Frank, sourcing antiques – then adding our unique twist, transforming motifs into something fresh and creating the unexpected by adding contemporary finishes and detail. I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved. Our pieces will constantly surprise and tell a story, whether in shape or finish.

How are you celebrating your 35th anniversary?

Turning 35 prompted us to reflect on where we are now – looking over our back catalogue of designs has led us to revisit old shapes. We have selected three designs, each representing a different decade and reimagined them for today, applying new finishes, updating the intricate details and adding new twists – our Capsule collection.

Plans for the future?

It’s important to be different and know who you are; we will continue to experiment with new finishes, play with shapes and combine these elements to make standout pieces that stand the test of time.
