Controversy over new dressage tack rules
NEW tack rules implemented by British Dressage (BD) after the items recently received FEI approval have been met with controversy, writes Rachael Hook.
The organisations have permitted a number of less traditional bridles, which have become increasingly popular in recent months. These include the Tota Comfort System and the Stübben Freedom Bridle (news, 14 July).
Grackle nosebands, which are already allowed in British Eventing (BE) competitions, have also been legalised under the updated BD rules, along with figure-of-eight and crossed nosebands.
This change has prompted mixed reactions among grassroots riders.
North Lincolnshire-based Victoria Horsewood said the new rules help cater for different horses’ needs.
“Not all horses have the same shaped head or mouth, therefore different tack would make them more comfortable and responsive,” she said.
However, other riders have said the new rules move away from the principles of traditional dressage.
Gloucestershire-based Lauren White saw the changes as compromising the discipline.
“Dressage is meant to be about harmony between horse and rider, but the more tack you put on the less harmony there’ll be, in my opinion,” she said. “Grackles may have their place but certainly not in classical dressage.”
Paul Graham, BD’s sport operations manager, said the organisation aims to follow FEI rules where possible, to maintain consistency between national and international competition.
“Horse welfare remains of paramount importance at all times, while still making sure that all equipment remains in line with the essence of our sport,” he told H&H.
Other riders have argued the focus should be on allowing snaffles in FEI competitions.
Dressage rider Abi Hutton, wife of grand prix rider Charlie, said she would rather see this change, as currently only double bridles are permitted in international events.
Debbie Marfell, BE sport manager, said the organisation had also been monitoring updated FEI tack rules.
“It would be too early to say if any changes will be made to BE rules as all rules need to be approved through the BE sport committee,” she said.
