TALKING POINTS

-

TIM PRICE on being on a team with his wife, Jonelle: “It’s a bloody nightmare — we have to share a room and she’s always telling me off for leaving the floor wet or something. I’d like to draw a line down the middle of the room.”

And on life in the Athletes’ Village: “We’re in a bubble here doing the horses, then you get on a bus back to the village and there are all these highly tuned freaks — sorry, athletes — walking around. You go to the food hall and it’s amazing, you’re just rubbernecking the whole time.”

WILLIAM FOX-PITT on headgear in the dressage: “I’ve always worn a top hat in the dressage and I’ve been eventing 33 years. Of course I’ll wear a crash hat when we are forced to, which we will be, but if I’m going to look like a pillock, why not delay it as long as possible?”

PIPPA FUNNELL on sinking onto the grass after her cross-country round: “I did feel a bit woozy — I’ve been diagnosed with asthma and it got to me at the end, but it didn’t have anything to do with the problem at fence 30.”

And on Billy The Biz’s owner, Carol Toliver, who died recently: “She owned horses with us for 15 years and was only 56. It hit me like a thunderbolt, but she would be proud of her little grey pony.”

COLLEEN LOACH on riding here for Canada versus grooming in London for her horse Qorry Blue D’Argouges’ owner Peter Barry: “I prefer it as I love competing and riding. Grooming in London let me get to know the team dynamics and how everything works without the pressure of riding.”

CAMILLA KRUGER (33rd after cross-country with a jumping clear on Biarritz, pictured) on becoming Zimbabwe’s first equestrian athlete: “I’m so overwhelmed and incredibly emotional. Our aim was to complete and work from here for Tokyo, which is our focus, so this is a bonus — Biarritz is still getting his bearings at this level.

“I wasn’t 100% convinced about the horse when I first saw him. I thought I’d produce and sell him, but then my other horse had an injury, so Biarritz stepped up to the mark.”
