Polo club has plenty to offer

WARWICKSHIRE’S Dallas Burton Polo Club is wowing dressage riders with its “gorgeous surfaces” and “impeccable organisation”, reports Stephanie Bateman.

The venue began holding British Dressage competitions last month, and hosted its second event on 27 July.

Saddle-fitter Craig Millard, who topped two novices with plus-70% at the venue, was one competitor keen to sing its praises.

“The new venue is absolutely stunning and I couldn’t fault it,” he said. “Without any doubt, I’ll be going back with more horses. I hope people support it as we could do with a few more venues like it.”

Craig’s novice wins came aboard Denise and Suzanne Clayton’s nine-year-old AES stallion Rubatino, whom he has been riding for three months.

“He was BEF Futurity eventing two-year-old champion, but he’s had a few minor injuries so he’s now concentrating on dressage,” Craig added. “He’s green, and needs a bit more exposure, but is very talented and more like a dope on a rope than a stallion.”

Showjumper Leanne Bailey is enjoying a change of discipline with Moira Johnston’s eightyear-old traditional gypsy cob mare Fairytale III. The pair scored a prelim win with over 75% at Hargate Arena, Derbys (31 July).

“She’s come a long way since she first arrived — she couldn’t canter or bend,” said Leanne. “With the help of Gillian Murray, I’ve taught her to extend without running and canter without diving onto her forehand. We’ve now qualified for the traditional gypsy cob championships and the Area Festivals.” H&H
