Ian originally evented the homebred Upton’s Deli Circus x Dutch Diamond 12-year-old up to BE100 level, including qualifying and competing at the grassroots championships at Badminton, but for the past three years he has concentrated on dressage.

“I decided I was getting too geriatric to event,” declared Ian. “I do miss the eventing but I’m enjoying the dressage and we’re making progress with Cathy Stevens’ help. I’m hoping to go to Tushingham’s Area Festival but my competing is very much determined by my kids’ eventing plans and I know my place!”

The mare is out of Ian’s event mare K’s Next Diamond who competed up to intermediate.

“Her daughter’s very like her,” added Ian. “Very opinionated but with her lovely easy movement.”

Joanne Walsh has only recently registered her Wolkenstein II x Grand Cru 10-year-old Wudison Wyshstein and in only two outings, the latest at Crow Wood where she won both prelims, she has picked up her first Area Festival qualifying sheets. Joanne, who trains with Helen Robinson, has done a bit of everything with the horse but recently decided to concentrate on dressage.

“He’s such an amazing mover so it was the logical decision,” said Joanne, who bought the horse as an unbacked colt after a friend saw his advert. “He was very poor but as soon as he came out of the stable you could see this movement. He had a couple of offspring before we had him cut and they’re just getting out and competing.”
