Equestrian governance in question

- EJ

ALLEGATIONS of elitism, self-interest, bullying and corruption at the British Equestrian Federation (BEF) are to be investigated as part of an independent review.

Former CEO Clare Salmon called for the investigation when she resigned (news, 27 July).

The review will be chaired by John Mehrzad, a barrister who specialises in employment, commercial and sports law disputes and was on a panel commissioned by UK Sport and British Cycling to investigate the latter’s world class programme.

The other members are Sharon Scotson and Ben Ewart, both former senior police officers who are experienced investigators.

Their remit includes the question: “Are there fundamental relationship issues within and between the organisations involved in British equestrian sport? If so, what are they?”

They will look into how any issues should be addressed and implications for the BEF and equestrian sport in general.

The panel will aim to complete its investigation by 1 December.

The cost will be shared between the BEF, Sport England and UK Sport.
